Problem Solving

Today Mrs Gempton gave us a mathematical problem that we had to work out...

There are 23 people at a cafe.  The tables sit either 5 or 2 people.  Each table is full.  There are 7 tables.

How many tables of 5 and 2 were there?

We worked with our learning buddies...
Check out our thinking...

Maths Fun for Home

Here are some of the games we are enjoying playing at the moment, to help us with our Maths learning.  These are super games to practise tens in numbers and number bonds to 10.  Have a go! :-)

Fabulous Maths in Team Toru

We have been learning how to present information we have gathered, in a graph.  This week we used the information we collected about the Olympic Games and which value we thought was the most important, to become an Olympic athlete.  We created a Pie Graph and then wrote our findings.  Check out these clever Team Toru Tamariki!

Using our Thinking Muscles

Today we have collected some data around the Olympic Games.  In groups, we worked through a series of questions around the Olympic Games and recorded our answers using tally marks.  Tomorrow we will use this information to help us graph the results.

At Reading time the Cat in the Hats and Grinches Reading Groups,  read a story about spiders.  We read silently and then wrote down one fact we had not known before to share with the group.  After completing a response activity, we then wrote down some wonderings.  Tomorrow, we are going to research our questions and see if we can find the answers.

Statistics Fun

We had so much fun today rolling our Superhero dice.  Once we had rolled it, we tallied how many times each character appeared.  Using that information we created bar graphs so that we could present our findings.  Great stuff Team Toru!

Welcome Back for Term 3

Tena koutou Team Toru whanau!  We have had a super first day back for Term 3.  Our brains are switched on and ready for learning.
Today we had a look at the new set-up of our room and chose our new seat for the beginning of the term... then the learning started!
We will be learning about what makes an Olympic attitude - how does someone get to the Olympics?  What characteristics do they need to be an Olympian?  But for today, we just thought about what we know about the Olympic Games - a new thing for all of the class who were not old enough to remember the games from four years ago!!!  Mrs Gempton had a huge torch in the middle of the room... I wonder what that is for?
We also did some fabulous mathematical thinking around number for our hotspot.  Check out the suggestions of how to make 12 on our board that we came up with :-)
Bring on the term!

Shape Find

Today we started our focus on 2D and 3D shapes.  First we sorted shapes into groups, naming each of these.  We then introduced the idea of sides and corners... also some new shape names like trapezium and rhombus!  Using magazines, we then went on a shape hunt, looking for pictures of shapes.  We had difficulty finding diamonds and hexagons, but found lots of ovals, circles, squares, rectangles and triangles!

Measuring Area

Today we had lots of fun measuring the area of leaves.  First we went out with Team Wha and then using cubes, we placed the cubes inside the leaves to see how many cubes we needed to cover the entire leaf.  Team Wha had the biggest leaf - 42 cubes!  What a huge leaf!
